Startup Marketing Essentials with Nathan Smith, Marketing and Design Director for Sup-X

Editor’s Note:  Rather than conduct our normal interview, I have asked my good friend and marketing guru Nathan Smith, President of Silverstream Consulting and Director of Marketing and Design for SUP-X, to give us his thoughts on startup marketing.  This is an introductory piece and we’ll ask Nathan to return occasionally to dive deeper on the topics that he surfaces today.  Enjoy.

Startup Marketing: The Initial Roadmap

Some people argue that startup marketing is a completely different animal than traditional marketing and that they are two distinct strategies. I’m not sure how they can justify this theory and the truth lies somewhere in between. I also think that people all too often conflate tactics with strategy. They are not the same thing either. Sun Tzu wrote, “Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy is the noise before defeat.” With these thoughts in mind, this is the roadmap I use when counseling startups in their marketing efforts:

Interview with Mark Volchek, Founding Partner - Las Olas Venture Capital

Las Olas Venture Capital is a new Florida-based early stage fund that invests in startups in a variety of industries. Our mission is to find outstanding entrepreneurs in non-obvious places and maximize their impact by connecting them to networks of capital, talent, and customers in well-established startup ecosystems.

We invest in extraordinary people who are building the future. This means technology that can redefine existing industries and create new ones. We call these people superheroes and transformers. They typically have asymmetrical insight into a particular industry and the superpowers for building products that create ascending user networks, which as a result drive transformational value.

Lack of diversity in venture capital, startup world topic for SUP-X in Fort Lauderdale

Diversity is not a strong suit in the venture capital world as women and ethnic minorities are less likely to receive funding for their startup business ventures than their white male counterparts, according to studies in the field of entrepreneurship.

At the SUP-X startup business expo in Fort Lauderdale early next month, a forum is scheduled to examine the reasons why and explore what can be done to rectify the situation.

SUP-X Addresses Diversity Issues in Venture Capital and Startup Communities; Announces Diversity Forum Lineup

An international startup conference in Fort Lauderdale in March will examine the lack of diversity in the venture capital and startup communities.  SUP-X®: The StartUp Expo, the largest startup conference in the state of Florida and one of the largest in the country, will begin with a special half-day “Diversity in Entrepreneurship Forum” that seeks to address communities that are historically under-represented and under-served in the venture capital/startup ecosystem.

Announced: All SUP-X 2017 Startup Competition Semi-Finalists

Fifty Startups Selected for National Startup Competition

Fifty startups from 10 states and Puerto Rico have been selected as semi-finalists in the SUP-X®: The StartUp Expo national startup competition in Fort Lauderdale in early March. The companies will each receive a free booth at the international conference and will be considered for the finals to compete for $50,000 in cash prizes.

SUP-X: The StartUp Expo is the largest startup conference in the state of Florida and one of the largest in the country.  The two-day, international conference and expo will be held on March 6th and 7th at the Broward Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale.  The conference is expected to attract approximately 1500 attendees from over 35 states and a dozen countries this year.  The purpose of the conference is to better connect and educate investors, entrepreneurs and service providers from throughout North America while further growing and enriching the Florida entrepreneurial ecosystem, explained conference founder Bob Fitts of Miami.

“We’re excited to have these outstanding startups represent their communities in our startup competition,” said Fitts.  “We have startups coming from all over North America and the Caribbean.  The exchange of ideas, learning opportunities and chance to form relationships make for a great experience for them.  It will be interesting to see who wins, but it should be a very valuable experience for them regardless.”

In addition to its startup competition, SUP-X features a “Diversity in Entrepreneurship Forum” that seeks to address the needs of those typically under-served and under-represented in the startup and venture capital communities.  The event also has some 18 panels, speeches and keynote addresses on topics such as the importance of good design, minority access to capital, FinTech and blockchain, raising capital and becoming a better angel investor.  Speakers include Scott Decker, CEO of MDLive; Carmen Castillo, Founder, President and CEO of SDI International, the nation’s largest Latina-Owned Business; Albert Santalo, founder of CareCloud; and Shelby Gogulski and Rachel Zietz, two superstar teen entrepreneurs who both recently appeared on Shark Tank.  Nearly 100 non-profits devoted to entrepreneurship, accelerators and angel groups from around the country have partnered with SUP-X and approximately 100 startups and corporate sponsors will exhibit at SUP-X as well.

Tickets to SUP-X range from $59-$399.  More information about SUP-X may be found at http://www.sup-x.org/ or by contacting info@sup-x.org.
